What is olfactory marketing?
Olfactory marketing is part of sensory marketing. It involves techniques using fragrances or scents to create sensory experiences for consumers or potential clients with objectives such as:
Enhancing brand perception
Attracting attention to a particular product or brand
Creating an olfactory memory of the brand
Generating positive memories or emotions related to the brand
Triggering consumer emotions through their sense of smell
Benefits of olfactory marketing for businesses
Businesses opting for olfactory marketing enjoy the following benefits:
Neutralizing unpleasant odors
Many businesses emit odors that are unpleasant or even repulsive to customers. For instance, the smell of medicine in a clinic or disinfectants in dental clinics immediately associates with negative experiences that make patients nervous. With a specially designed scents for businesses for these places, customers not only feel calmer but also associate them with pleasant experiences.
Increased dwell time
Correctly chosen aromas can attract and motivate customers to stay longer in commercial premises, cafes, restaurants, and other businesses. This increases interaction time with products and the brand.
Enhanced brand value perception
Subconsciously, customers perceive scented spaces and products as higher quality. A study by Nike showed that customers are willing to pay between 10% to 15% more for sneakers found in an aromatized area compared to similar ones in fragrance-free zones.
Increased sales
Aromas trigger emotional connections with people, improving their brand perception, increasing their dwell time in stores, attracting more people to enter establishments. This combined effect is highly effective in boosting sales. For example, it is estimated that in coffee and food businesses, aromas like coffee, bread, and butter can increase sales by up to 55%.
Applications of olfactory marketing in different sectors
Olfactory marketing can be used across various sectors including:
Retail: Stores and Boutiques
Clothing, shoe, and accessory stores use aromas to create a pleasant, attractive atmosphere that connects with potential customers, inviting them to enter and make purchases. Some stores use different scents, as scents for retail stores, in product sections so customers can associate them with specific values or characteristics. For example, a department store may use different aromas in the baby department than in the sports, women's clothing, or electronics sections.
Hospitality: Hotels, Resorts, Vacation Rentals, and Restaurants
In the hospitality sector, aromas are used to create ideal environments for fun, relaxation, and rest. Different fragrances, as the aroma hotel scent, are used in each space—such as the lobby, rooms, hallways, and clubs—to enhance brand perception and influence guests' emotions.
Health and Wellness
Clinics, offices, hospitals, and spas also use aromas to promote relaxation and well-being, creating calmer environments where patients feel comfortable and safe.
Education
Educational environments such as schools, universities, libraries, and bookstores use aromas to provide the ideal setting for concentration, focus, and learning.
Public Spaces
In public places like shopping malls or airports, aromas influence the mood and overall experience of visitors.
Law Offices, Accountants, and Financial Consultants
Professional service offices can also use the principles of scent marketing to build trust with clients and convey professionalism, elegance, and seriousness.
Automotive
Car dealerships, showrooms, and even some mechanic shops use olfactory marketing to enhance the buyer's experience and create a perception of luxury and comfort necessary to encourage major purchases.

Success Stories
AENA – Málaga Airport (Spain)
In 2021, as part of the experience the airport aims to offer its users, they identified that in the rest areas, people often do not have a completely pleasant time. Passengers are usually tired from waiting and eager to board their flights.
For this reason, they were looking for new ways to make the stay more enjoyable. They contacted us, and we analyzed which rest areas could be enhanced to improve the user experience. We selected three specific areas:
1. Work Area
This area includes charging stations for electronic devices and small tables where people can sit to work or check their computers. Additionally, there are some armchairs for people to relax. For this space, we chose the "Deep Blue" scent from our portfolio, which features fruity and woody olfactory notes. This combination promotes a sense of motivation, vitality, and satisfaction.
2. Tropical Green Garden Area
This area replicates an artificial green space where people can feel like they are outside the airport, escaping the often overwhelming crowds. In this space, we introduced the “Life in the Grass” aroma, which helps create the sensation of being in a tropical environment.
3. Old Walkway Corridor
Another area chosen was a more traditional waiting zone: the old walkway corridor. Here, seating is often limited, and many people end up sitting on the floor while waiting. We introduced the Jasmine aroma in this space, known for its ability to evoke calmness and relaxation. It is also a universally recognizable scent.
Since partnering with AENA, we have received excellent feedback about how refreshing these specific areas feel within the airport, as well as the sense of tranquility they provide to users.
